The Lord hands down an indictment against hypocrisy. The psalm indicts people who practice formalism in worship. However, Christ advises us to â€Å"worship in spirit and truth†(John 4:24). This psalm is Messianic in nature; the commentary describes the psalm as an imprecatory psalm. This psalm has become a popular psalm over the years.
